El director de la OMS acusó a los países ricos de socavar el sistema de distribución equitativo de vacunas

El director de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) acusó el lunes a «algunos países ricos de socavar» el sistema de distribución de vacunas anticovid Covax, al persistir en acercarse directamente a los fabricantes para tener acceso a más dosis.

«Algunos países ricos se acercan actualmente a los fabricantes para garantizar el acceso a dosis adicionales de vacunas (…) y por eso se ha reducido el número de dosis asignadas a Covax», criticó el director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus en conferencia de prensa.

El sistema Covax se creó para tratar de evitar que los países ricos monopolizaran las vacuna que aún se fabrican en cantidades demasiado pequeñas para satisfacer la demanda mundial.

El sistema Covax incluye un mecanismo de financiación que permite que 92 naciones con economías de ingresos bajos y medios tengan acceso a las vacunas.

Pero la escasez hace que las primeras distribuciones a los países pobres no se realicen hasta finales de mes, mientras en muchos países ricos las campañas de vacunación se iniciaron a finales de 2020.

Respondiendo a una pregunta sobre los compromisos sustanciales contraídos por Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea para aumentar significativamente su contribución a Covax, el Director General mostró su frustración.

«Tener el dinero no significa nada, si no puedes usarlo para comprar vacunas«, dijo.

«Y solo podemos entregar vacunas a los países miembros de Covax si los países ricos cooperan respetando los contratos», insistió.

Además insto a esos países, que no identificó, a asegurarse de no socavar el sistema de distribución supervisado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y la alianza de vacunas (Gavi) entre otros.
